You wake up to start your day. You roll out of bed, groggy. The air in your bedroom feels a little cold. You take a shower and your home is much warmer. You go to the kitchen and your coffee is brewed. Your morning headlines, tailored for your personal interests, are already available to your on your tablet. You start making breakfast while humming your favorite tune that plays softly in the background.
All of this, and you didn’t have to do anything or talk to anyone.
Well, anyone except Alexa. But Alexa isn’t a person, it’s a home assistant. A robot. A science fiction monstrosity that will take over the world.
Okay, so Amazon’s modern toys – the Amazon Dot, Echo, or Tap – won’t take over the world, but it can take over your home if you want it. Many people are thinking about getting a home assistant for Christmas. We’ve all seen the commercials where people talk to it and order takeout or flowers. But there are actually a lot of cool things that they can do.
Amazon has actually opened up the development side of their home assistant so that third-party developers can tailor apps and appliances to link to Alexa and receive commands. This means that the possibilities are constantly expanding on what a home assistant can do for you.
So yes, you can actually roll out of bed and say, “Alexa, make me a cup of coffee” and Alexa will talk to your wi-fi connected coffee maker and start brewing. Other helpful commands include the ability to set the temperature in your home with a wi-fi connected thermostat, run the dishwasher, crock pot, and many many more. Just search “things that Alexa can do” in Google, and you will find dozens of cool uses.
Of course, this all means that you have to have appliances and gadgets that are able to accept Alexa’s commands. But it wouldn’t be surprising to see these features come standard on new appliances starting as early as next year, which means in five to ten years, homes may have the ability to be completely controlled through a home assistant.
